Our Story
Originally born and raised in South Africa, I have always enjoyed the incredible super food properties found in the traditional meat snack called biltong.
The concept of creating biltong for dogs was first hatched after a discussion at our local butcher and specialist master biltong maker, after watching my teenage son play rugby, and both hungry for some of the good stuff.
If Biltong was the ultimate power snack for humans then why not for dogs.
Naturally this would entail paring back the traditional salts, spices and chilli ingredients & replacing them with a pet friendly alternative.
After many trips to pet stores conducting extensive market research and discussions with renowned industry professionals, we confirmed there was a gap in the dog-treat market for a range of truly high value, Reward & Recall based Training Treats.

From experience we knew that most dogs are bribable, and when you have the best bribe in the world they’ll do most anything for it!
We continued to experiment with various ingredients & combinations, consulting with veterinarians & nutritionists, until we settled on a unique blend which instinctively appealed to our taste buds.
Product testing being the key, an independent focus group run by the renowned Dog Friendly Magazine, reported that 100% of their testers on blind tasting reacted positively. Something quite unheard of previously from any other of their four-legged trials.
Our brand & packaging concept was developed in conjunction with the University of Hertfordshire Creative Arts Faculty & we then began the process of obtaining manufacturing approval.
Upon receiving our Defra License – making us the first authentic manufacturer of traditional biltong for pets in the UK, our journey offering a dog treat range like no other, began in earnest.

Introducing a brand new product to market, we recognised the need to explain and promote our unique range directly to dog owners.
Engaging with customers and woofers in person at live events continues to give us immense pleasure and is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how effective our products are in providing positive reinforcement, fun & enter-trainment.
Whether it be puppy training, recall, heel work or supporting anxious dogs in unfamiliar surroundings, it may take a special incentive to encourage your dog to do what you need them to, and we can consistently show ByBenji is the answer.
Likewise, we maintain the core belief that it is important we work with stockists who have a similar ethos, typically high end Independent Stores & Trainers who are willing to actively champion our products. Those with established client relationships who have the experience, knowledge, time & interest to match the specific needs of their customers and provide appropriate solutions.
In 2021, we expanded our team and having outgrown our original HQ moved to a brand new production facility.
Retaining our artisanal roots, our purposely designed unit is located on a fabulous farm. It is a particularly dog friendly destination with a fantastic independent vet practice, as well as a renowned doggy day care & groomer on site.
We thrive on people’s feedback, and as our ByBenji reputation for providing the ultimate treat experience deepens, we are humbled by how our products are truly making a difference.
Medical assistance dogs use our products as rewards for alert training. Therapy dog handlers, rescue and rehoming charities regularly report that our treats attract the attention of even the most traumatized of cases.
